BRUCE JESSON MEMORIAL LECTURE 2004 - 15 November 2004

The Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Political Studies at the University of Auckland, is delighted to announce that the Bruce Jesson Lecture for 2004 will be delivered by Ani Mikaere. Ani is one of the current generation of outstanding Maori women intellectuals. Of Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga descent, she is currently the Director of Master of Laws and Philosophy at te Wananga o Raukawa.

Ani’s topic is ‘Are we all New Zealanders now? A Mäori response to the Päkehä quest for indigeneity’

In recent times there have been increasingly plaintive appeals for Mäori to "trust" Päkehä (Trevor Mallard), to accord them "mutuality of respect" (Michael King) or to accept that "there is a limit to how much any generation can apologise for the sins of its great grandparents" (Don Brash). Such pleas appear to be closely tied to the search for a collective sense of nationhood, one which is inclusive of Päkehä.

The Päkehä quest for indigeneity and legitimacy in Aotearoa, it is argued, is ultimately contingent upon Mäori acceptance of the Päkehä presence here. How then, from a Mäori perspective, might such acceptance be gained?

The lecture will be delivered at the Maidment Theatre at Auckland University at 6.30pm on Monday 15 November. A pay bar will be open from 5.30 pm and again after the lecture.

Please note that no seats will be reserved and you will need to be seated no later than 6.15 pm on the evening of the lecture.

Yours sincerely,
